Happy Birthday & Happy Mother's Day, Mom

Sunday, May 09, 2021

Today would have been my mom's 86th birthday.  Every few years her birthday also falls on Mother's Day.  This year is one of those years so today I'm dedicating this birthday card to my mom.  I love you and miss you dearly.

I just received the Daisy Lane stamp set, Daisy Punch, and Medium Daisy Punch.  I guess you could say everything's coming up daisies in my world since I literally have about 50 seedlings of Alaska daisies sprouting.  I started about 25 pods of painted daisies but they aren't faring very well right now.  My painted daisy plants from last year, however, are beginning to sprout so I will have some anyway.

I saw a similar card to this on Pinterest that caught my eye so I thought I'd give it a twist and see how it came out.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  The photo doesn't show it very well but I did use the Dainty Diamonds 3D Embossing Folder on the front.  I really like to pop of color the Mango Melody adds to the card.  I think I'm going to try another card later with a couple of the new 2021-2023 In Colors.

I started with a 5-1/2 x 8-1/2" piece of Night of Navy card stock for my base and scored it at 4-1/4" on the long side.  I spritzed the side I was going to emboss with alcohol to help break the fibers of the card stock.  It's important to break the fibers of the card stock when embossing a dense design to prevent cracks.  You can also break fibers by spritzing with water or bending and curling against the edge of a table.  Spritzing with water or alcohol with any embossing folder also helps to bring more definition to the embossed image.

I cut my Basic White card stock into a 1/2 x 5-1/2" strip and a 1-3/4 x 4-1/4" strip.  I used Stamp & Seal adhesive on the back of each then placed the narrow strip vertically along the far left front of the card and the wide strip horizontally about 1" up from the bottom front of the card.  I then cut a 1/4 x 4-1/4" strip from the scrap of Mango Melody card stock, ran a thin bead of Multipurpose Liquid Glue on the back, and placed it at the top of the horizontal Basic White strip as an accent.

I stamped the large and medium daisy images from the Daisy Lane stamp set using Misty Moonlight ink after stamping off onto scratch paper twice before stamping each image (large daisy twice/medium daisy 4 times) onto Basic White card stock.  This is sometimes referred to as 2nd (actually 3rd) generation stamping.  I then punched the images out with the coordinating punches.  I layered two images by placing a small amount of Multipurpose Liquid Glue in the center.  Then I colored the centers with the darker Mango Melody Stampin' Blend Marker.

Using Shaded Spruce ink, I stamped 2 fern images and 1 daisy stem onto the scrap of Garden Green card stock then fussy cut the images.  Last, but not least, I cut a 1-1/8 x 3" strip of Mango Melody card stock, stamped it with the "Happy Birthday" greeting from Sky Is The Limit (Retired) stamp set in the Tuxedo Black Memento ink, then punched the left side with the Banners Pick a Punch.

Once I had all my elements ready, I played around with the arrangement until I was happy with how it looked.  I chose to use a sticker maker for the adhesive on the fern and daisy stem (you could also apply a light layer of Multipurpose Liquid Glue using a sponge) then placed them on the card front.  I then applied a couple glue dots to the center of each daisy and adhered them to the card.  I also curled up the top layer of the daisy to give them a bit of dimension.  Finally, I attached Mini Stampin' Dimensionals to my greeting and placed it on the card front.

I also like to add a piece of 4 x 5-1/4" Basic White card stock to the inside of my cards especially when I use a dark colored base so that my verse or hand-written message can easily be seen.  I also like to add a stamped or fussy cut image or stickers.

If I was able to send this card to my mom, I would have had a birthday verse and added a hand-written "Happy Mother's Day."  Hopefully she's looking down from above and sees my dedication.

I hope you have enjoyed today's card as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.
